πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Sonic Canvas 005

A special Fernie Canada Day recap edition of Sonic Canvas featuring music by Hanson, Chappell Roan, Spirit of the West, Deee-Lite, and Martin Solveig (featuring Dragonette).

This is Sonic Canvas: a deep dive into an audiovisual world born from electronic music and generative art.

A DJ deck with the words 'Welcome to SONIC CANVAS' at the top, and 'Follow me on Twitch: twitch.tv/steelorcaio' superimposed over the deck in red and white text.
A person wearing a baseball cap looks down behind a black and white sign that reads 'STEEL ORCA'. The setting appears to be an outdoor event, with a white tent overhead decorated with Canadian flags, and cars and trees visible in the background.

What a day in Fernie for Canada Day!

I had the honour of being on the decks at City Hall for Canada Day, keeping the music going between the awesome live band sets. It was a scorcher out there, so while the sets were short and sweet, I loved every second of providing the soundtrack. It's not every day you get to spin with such a stunning mountain view.

The atmosphere in Fernie was incredible all day. The whole area was buzzing with festive energy, and it was great seeing families and friends out celebrating together. A huge and heartfelt thank you to the Canada Day Planning Committee for the invitation and for organizing such a wonderful event for the community.

I brought the energy of the day back to the studio for the latest Sonic Canvas! It’s a mix featuring all my favourite music from the Canada Day set. Hit the links below to listen to the tracks or watch the full audiovisual experience.

🎡 Songs I Bought

🎈 MMMBop – Hanson

MMMBop - Hanson

A pure shot of 90s nostalgia. This track is an instant mood-booster and a guaranteed singalong for a sunny afternoon. For a family-friendly event, you just can’t beat the pure, unadulterated joy it brings.

πŸ’¬ Hello (feat. Dragonette) – Martin Solveig

Hello (feat. Dragonette) – Martin Solveig

An absolute explosion of energy, and a perfect nod to our own, with Canadian group Dragonette on the vocals! It’s the ultimate welcoming trackβ€”upbeat, infectious, and impossible to stand still for when that synth line kicks in.

πŸ›Ό Groove Is in the Heart – Deee-Lite

Groove Is in the Heart – Deee-Lite

Some tracks are simply timeless, and this is exhibit A. That iconic bassline is an instant mood-lifter that cuts across generations, making it the perfect recipe for a sunny afternoon celebration. It’s pure, positive, and funky energy that absolutely commands you to start dancing. The title says it all.

Pink Pony Club – Chappell Roan

This was a last-minute addition, and I have my daughter and nephews to thank for it! They insisted I absolutely had to play it, telling me it's a massive hit with all their friends. They were 100% right. As soon as the track began, you could see the kids in the crowd light up, immediately dancing and singing along right where they were. It was an incredible, energetic moment that proved I should listen to my personal music consultants more often.

Song of the Week πŸ™Œ

🍻 Home for a Rest – Spirit of the West

Home for a Rest – Spirit of the West

This isn't just the unofficial national party anthemβ€”it's a local legend. In a CBC poll, British Columbians actually voted "Home for a Rest" their favourite B.C. song of all time, so playing it on Canada Day in Fernie was an absolute must. It’s the one track guaranteed to unite the entire crowd in a massive, stomping, and heartfelt singalong.
